"Back Home."

Bates's appreciation for England, especially its flowers and trees, after several months in the South Seas, is followed by concern that "the character of the English village is rapidly altering -- disastrously." Bates relates visits with his wife to families and schools in Fiji and Samoa and contemplates that perhaps it is only those "who come home from remote places, out of great distances, who quite realise what England can really mean." In the Sunday Express (London, May 16, 1954).
