"From My Garden."

In this first of many gardening columns in Living magazine, Bates recounts his discovery of the Granary, his family home for thirty-six years, and introduces his garden (with accompanying color photographs, including ones of him and his wife Marjorie). He also cautions the reader that his column will not provide gardening instruction but will instead "point the way to a sort of gardening that will give more pleasure for less work." Subsequent columns are of an equivalent length, and most contain color photographs and drawings; some lack the series title "From My Garden." In Living (December 1967, 1:1, pp. 12-13).
