"Gone Away."

Bates portrays a young boy who has been shielded from knowledge of his grandfather's death. When no one will tell him where his grandfather is, "catching sight of his mother's white, plaintive face against the breaking sky, he burst into weeping." In Day's End and Other Stories (1928).
