"The Landlady."

A story of a dissatisfied housewife and her lodgers, a young father with his daughter. She mistreats the girl and has an affair with the man; she feels "elated, clarified, a new woman," but the daughter's face is hard "with the crystallization of many emotions: fear, hatred, unbelief and some proud dumb notion of revenge." In Something Short and Sweet (1937), Country Tales (1938), Country Tales (1940), Twenty Tales (1951).
