"On the Making of a Garden."

With numerous photographs. Bates expresses some of his favorite thoughts about gardens: "As a man is, so is his garden," "A garden...should never stand still," and "Love...is what true gardens are made of." A man identified as "Gardener Aubrey" in a photograph is, according to a member of Bates's family, incorrectly identified. In House and Garden (December/January 1971/1972).
