"The Pemberton Thrush."

A boy is infatuated with a beautiful singer who precipitously quits his father's vocal quartet, and then recalls some thirty years later chancing upon her in a train. The tale probably reflects Bates's boyhood with a choir-leading father (Albert Bates). In Argosy (May 1959, with title "Pemberton Thrush"), The Watercress Girl and Other Stories (1959).
