"A Place in the Heart."

Set in an undefined place in Asia -- with a backdrop of rickshaws and ceremonial drumming -- an Englishman, shortly before returning home, becomes involved with a lovely shopgirl with a foot injury. His inarticulate and flippant goodbye, already anticipating fishing in England, is contrasted with her disappointed acceptance of the drumming that "never really stops...It goes on. You only think it stops." In The Daffodil Sky (1955).
