"The Queen of Spain Fritillary."

A reminiscence by a middle-aged woman, of a summer flirtation she carried on with an old man when she was seventeen. Bates portrays the pastoral setting of their romance, and the selfishness, foolishness, and thoughtlessness that characterized it. In Argosy (September 1956), Death of a Huntsman/Summer in Salander (1957), The Grapes of Paradise (1974), The Poison Ladies and Other Stories (1976). Reprinted in the Argosy Bedside Book (1965). The novella was dramatized for BBC Radio by Gregory Evans in 1986 (free signup required to listen).
