"Report on Spain."

Bates describes Franco's Spain as impoverished, graft-ridden, and feudal, and its people sunk in illiteracy and prostitution. With numerous photographs. Letters from readers printed a month later called his article prejudiced and unbalanced, and Bates responded briefly in "H.E. Bates Answers Back." In Illustrated (July 22, 1950, pp. 9-13, 35).
