"Shall We Send our Children to an Elementary School?"

Bates makes a strong case for state-funded schooling, rather than small private schools, as the choice for most parents (who cannot afford the "great private schools that are, for some reason, known as public"). He makes an exception when the local village school has been closed, which explains Bates's choice of the Ashford School for both of his daughters. In Housewife (April 1940, pp. 58-60).
