"My Favorite Painting."

The title of this piece appears in the journal issue's table of contents. Beneath the reproduction of the painting appears the statement "H.E.Bates is an enthusiastic collector of Modern Art. We asked him to choose his favourite in his collection - and here it is: WOMAN SEWING by Henri-Gabriel Ibels." Bates provides background information on Ibels, and his friendship with Toulouse-Lautrec, and wonders how Ibels, in the midst of a debauched Parisian nightlife, could "manage to turn himself inside out, as it were, and create the calmest, most lyrical and most respectful of pictures?" In Woman's Journal (December 1961, p. 26).
