"French Painters IV -- Signac and Cross."

Bates contributed two of nine essays printed in Apollo between February and December of 1952 (his second essay is "French Painters V -- Pissarro and Sisley"). Kenneth Towndrow was responsible for essays 1-3, and Eric Newton contributed essays 6-9. In this essay, Bates discusses the work of Delacroix (Cross) and Signac, the growth of Impressionism and more particularly Pointillism, and expresses an appreciation of the works reproduced in the article.
