"Lanko's White Mare."

A tale of a "quoits man" at a fairground and the deep bond between him and his horse. When the animal collapses, in part due to an uncharacteristic blow from him in an impatient moment, he is both remorseful and tender, supported by his fairground colleagues. First published as "The White Mare" in the London Mercury (May 1928). Published as "Lanko's White Mare" in Seven Tales and Alexander (1929), Thirty Tales (1934), Twenty Tales (1951). Reprinted in Best Animal Stories I Know (1929), Gentle Like a Cyclone (1974).
