Upon reading the twenty-year anthology of articles from The Countryman, Bates has high praise for Robertson Scott's vision and daring in founding the magazine. He writes of how Scott both led and responded to a "sharper hunger for England's green and pleasant land." In The Countryman (Winter 1948, p. 273-274).
