Bates reflects on advice given to him at the age of 17 by "the teacher who had already shown me, as blazingly as in a flashlight, the direction my life was to follow." The advice, to "remember that you stand or fall by your own work," was probably given by Bates's most influential teacher, Edmund (or E.E.) Kirby). In the Los Angeles Times (October 12, 1952, p. J2), New York Herald Tribune (October 12, 1952, p. SM2), and the Baltimore Sun (October 12, 1952, p. 172).
