"On The English Short Story."

In an essay preparatory to his book The Modern Short Story, Bates outlines the lack of an English story tradition until the genre became the perfect form of expression for post-war authors. "Ten years ago the existence in England of a daily newspaper publishing a short story each morning would have been a miracle" -- Bates notes that ten such newspapers now exist. In The Story: Devoted Solely to the Short Story (November, 1935).
