In an essay preparatory to his book The Modern Short Story, Bates outlines the lack of an English story tradition until the genre became the perfect form of expression for post-war authors. "Ten years ago the existence in England of a daily newspaper publishing a short story each morning would have been a miracle" -- Bates notes that ten such newspapers now exist.
