"The Widder."

An Uncle Silas piece not featuring the usual outrageous reminiscence by Silas, but instead a recollection by the narrator of a lovely country outing with his uncle to a "widder" with a "long rambling orchard," and thus bearing some of the dreamlike qualities of Bates's early coming-of-age tale "Alexander." A television adaptation starring Albert Finney was aired in 2001. In Evening Standard (August 16, 1956), Sugar for the Horse (1957).
